Festive forest walks

by Alf Alderson, 20th November 2017

Conifer forests offer a great opportunity to get out and about with the family and explore your own winter wonderland; an experience that’s most magical when the snow falls

A walk through a frosty winter forest is the perfect outdoor escape as Christmas approaches, for what could be more festive than to be surrounded by literally thousands of Christmas trees, especially if the white stuff falls?

This month’s three walks take you through the heart of some of the Welsh Borders’ finest forests, where the combination of cold winter weather, shortening days and the evocative aroma of pine and fir trees is sure to act as a reminder of Yuletide.

ROUTE 1 – An easy loop through a mix of conifer and deciduous woodland east of the Wye Valley

ROUTE 2 – Quite a short, easy walk in the heart of the Berwyn National Nature Reserve

ROUTE 3 – A circuitous loop through the sheltered Llandegla Forest; a note of caution – watch out for speeding bikers as this is also a popular mountain biking centre!
