Restaurant Venu, Pwllheli

Anna Evans, head chef at Restaurant Venu in Gwynedd, is putting the eatery firmly on the area’s culinary map

Since opening in October 2015, the restaurant at Venu – a cosmopolitan new lounge, cocktail bar and dance venue in Pwllheli on the Llyn Peninsula – has been taking the Gwynedd town by storm.

“I’d heard about a business that was opening in Pwllheli and I was keen to put myself forward and show them what I could do,” Restaurant Venu’s new head chef, Anna Evans, told us in January 2016. A native of nearby Nefyn, Anna started out in her mother’s Pwllheli-based eatery before taking on the head chef role at the restaurant at The Warren holiday park in Abersoch.

“We were really impressed with Anna and her passion for food,” says Venu owner Victoria Morris. “I’d hired a consultant chef, Adam Gaunt Evans, and we had Anna come and cook for us. We were very impressed. We liked her instantly and we’re delighted to have her on board.”

To this end, Anna had plenty of ideas to make sure the restaurant was something special. “I wanted to create a menu with a few select dishes and change it often rather than have a large, static menu,” says Anna. “It means we have more flexibility – we do a different special every night – and it gives us a thrill that we can create something new, try different flavours and let the customer see our love for the food. “Everything’s prepared fresh in house using local produce,” Anna continues. “The plan is to change the menu every few weeks to keep it fresh and exciting so people keep coming back.”

“It’s all about integrating with the local community,” Victoria agrees. “This is a place for local people first and foremost, though, of course, visitors to the area are just as welcome.”

Both of the ladies from Venu are clear on their priorities going forward. “We’re going to open up the upper restaurant area and the terraces outside in the warmer weather,” says Victoria. “We have great big bifold windows in the restaurant that look out onto the harbour. It’s a lovely place to relax and have a drink. You could be anywhere in the world.”

“We’re going to develop the restaurant, make sure it’s running smoothly and that we continue serving quality food,” adds Anna. “Everyone’s happy to be here in this new and exciting business – they’re all enthusiastic and the atmosphere is great.”
