A west Wales distillery’s newly launched own-brand gin is not only proving a hit with customers, it’s already won several international awards

Wales has become a hotbed of successful gin brands over the past few years and the distillery behind several of these - In The Welsh Wind, based just north of Cardigan - is celebrating the success of its first own-brand gin.

Co-owners and directors Alex Jungmayr and Ellen Wakelam first dreamt up the idea of their own distillery when they discovered the success of the craft distilleries of North West Scotland during travels in 2017. Returning home, they founded In The Welsh Wind on the family farm at Tresaith in January 2018.

While their original intention had always been to distil and retail their own gin, an opportunity to develop a gin for a local bar set the distillery on the path of custom-branded spirits for other businesses. Over 35 gins later and having moved to flagship premises just north of Cardigan, Alex and Ellen decided that the time was right to get on with what they'd always planned to do - create an In The Welsh Wind own-brand gin. And this they did last year with the launch of Signature Style.

The inspiration for the ingredients came from a landing tarriff board fixed to the harbour wall in New Quay. Dating back to the port’s heyday, goods as diverse as gunpowder, tobacco, tea, feathers, sugar, oranges and currants are all listed. The Signature Style gin is a combination of these exotic flavours, such as orange and juniper, yet honouring the spices and aromas of the Welsh kitchen. Think tea-soaked currants, nutmeg and cloves.

It’s proved so popular, the distillery is now on its third batch. And it’s not just customers who love the brand either. It's scooped silver medals in the Gin Masters 2020 and the World Gin Awards 2021, as well as a bronze medal in the USA Spirits Ratings 2020. The design and packaging was also awarded a silver medal in the Gin Masters 2020.

“Our original intention was to produce our own gin, enough to enable us to make a living here in West Wales,” says Alex, who is also head distiller. “The opportunity to tread a different path opened up huge possibilities for us, and with hard work and the support of others we were able to launch our own Signature Style gin. To win these awards for our first own-brand gin is really exciting!”

Welsh Wind say the gin can be enjoyed neat or paired with an unflavoured full-fat tonic of your choice, and they recommend a garnish of dried orange peel studded with a single clove.

In The Welsh Wind Signature Style is available to buy direct from the distillery at and from an expanding selection of retail outlets throughout Wales.
