A kaleidoscope of colours will greet those who take to the Welsh coastline in spring and summer, with a wide range of plants enlivening the various habitats

Few things in life are more uplifting than the cheerful hues of spring wildflowers, and Wales’ coastline is especially blessed by these carpets of colour.

Some areas, such as the Pembrokeshire coast, are internationally famous for their displays in spring and early summer, but most stretches of the Welsh coastline have splashes of floral interest if you know where to look. And you’ll see different species as you traverse a range of habitats - such as these three we’ve picked out.

Enjoy the sights, but don’t be tempted to take the plants home. Apart from it being illegal, these specialised coastal flowers are unlikely to survive outside their natural environment.

Route 1 - This easy out-and-back walk near Swansea is ideal for all the family and takes in one of the Gower Peninsula’s most beautiful stretches of coastline, which is especially rich in wildflowers in spring 

Route 2 - A delightful, quite short stroll that takes in the best of the Mid Wales shore, from the attractive coastal village of Llangrannog to the spectacular coastline to the north 

Route 3 - This amble offers a fine mix of coastal walking and a short hike to a hilltop viewpoint for superb panoramas across Anglesey and the coastline
