Ridge rambles

Spend some time up in the sky with these ridgetop walks that make the climb more than worth it

What goes up must come down, as the old saying goes. And that’s often the trouble with climbing hills – you bust a gut getting to the top, then once you’ve turned a full circle to admire the view and discovered that the breeze is a bit nippy when you stand still, the only option is to test the knees on a long descent.

Our walks this month offer a little more bang for your buck. For once you hit the heights, you stay there, for a while at least. With these ridge routes, you can enjoy a lovely easy section of walking that’s several hundred metres up, where you can enjoy the wind blowing through your hair and admire Welsh Borders scenery as if through the eyes of a bird.

ROUTE 1 Views galore on this popular ridge in the Black Mountains

ROUTE 2 Gentle stroll along an ancient coral reef in Shropshire

ROUTE 3 To the end of the world and back near Llangollen
