Paintings by Sarah Earl, Pembrokeshire

Originally from Gloucestershire, Sarah moved to Pembrokeshire in 1990 and lives between Fishguard and Newport half a mile from the sea. She became a full-time artist 12 years ago after taking an art class and getting ‘completely obsessed’.

“There’s a beautiful wood near me called Ty Canol, and this painting is inspired by the stunning sea view from its burial chamber, Pentre Ifan.”

“I live near Newport and spend a lot of time there. It has a lovely old church surrounded by pretty cottages. On almost the same exact day every year the swifts arrive to nest in the church. One year I was there on that day and, moved by the birds’ arrival, felt inspired to paint the village. Though you can’t see this exact view from there I wanted to include iconic spots such as the beach and the headland.”

“From Newport you can look across to The Parrog [beach] where there’s a river which attracts oystercatchers. Amongst the line of houses is this group of three quirky cottages which really stand out. This painting was inspired by a walk there on a bluesky day, and I took a photograph to get the details right.”

“Porthclais is a tiny harbour owned by the National Trust – it was one of my mother’s favourite places. It’s lovely walking down the winding lane – where this scene is imagined from – into the inlet. There were poppies and swifts on this particular day and I couldn’t wait to get home to paint what I’d seen.”

“This is based on Cwm-yr-Eglwys where there are ruins of an old church mostly destroyed by a storm in the 19th century. I wanted to paint the village imagining what it would’ve looked like when the beautiful church still stood, adding the shooting star, owl and sheep to emphasise the dreamlike, night-time feel.”
