No. 9 Priory Hill, Brecon, Powys

by Webmaster, 13th September 2019

Feast your eyes on this grand Georgian townhouse, conveniently close to the town centre, yet enjoying plenty of space (including its very own secret garden!)

Although we normally feature secluded homes in the heart of the countryside, this month we couldn’t resist showing you this stunning townhouse in Brecon town centre.

For not only does No. 9 Priory Hill look handsome, with ornamental columns on the corners, but it also has a deceptively large garden, no fewer than seven bedrooms inside, plus an additional cottage which could be used as an annexe or even as a holiday let, if you wanted the property to provide an income.

A gated entrance leads to a private parking area, while inside you’ll be struck by the grandeur as soon as you step through the door. From the formal entrance hall, there’s a drawing room with period fireplace surround and mantel.

It’s one of many rooms in the house to have sash windows, and one of several that still has the original window shutters.

The dining room has a wood burning stove surrounded by a feature stone fire breast, while the kitchen has traditional flagstone flooring and a fitted gas-fired Rayburn. It’s from here that a door leads to the additional cottage, which can also be accessed externally via a paved courtyard.

The cottage has a sitting room and kitchen with built-in oven and a natural stone feature wall while, on the first floor, there are two bedrooms and a bathroom with a wood-panelled bath.

Back in the main house, on the first floor are three bedrooms: the master has windows overlooking the garden towards the Brecon Beacons, while another room has a door leading to a sizeable walk-in wardrobe. There’s also a family bathroom with roll-top bath.

On the second floor, meanwhile, are four more bedrooms, plus there’s a study/sleep area on the mezzanine.

One of the best surprises is the size of the garden, which is split into two areas. The first has a patio and landscaped gardens with lawns, flowerbeds and natural stone walling. Then there’s a ‘secret garden’ at a lower level, which has a wild grass meadow, an orchard and a vegetable plot. This runs alongside the beautiful River Honddu.

And yet with all this space both inside and out, the shops, cafes, bars and restaurants of Brecon are a short stroll away, not to mention the cathedral just around the corner.

For a combination of convenience, Georgian grandeur, land and income potential, you’d struggle to find better than No. 9 Priory Hill.
