Get up close and personal with nature this half term, courtesy of the RSPB
Throughout Wales, RSPB Cymru are hosting some fabulous family fun days out on their Big Wild Hallowe'en events. So grab your coat, wellies and witch’s hat and get along to one of the charity’s nature reserves this October.
Here is a round up of the best spooky nature-filled events for all ages to enjoy:
RSPB South Stack, Anglesey
Spooky South Stack Trail
Can you solve the clues to complete the RSPB’s spooky family trail? Pick up an activity pack to help you on your way to a spooky adventure around the nature reserve. You will have a fangtastic time!
Date: 23 – 31 October
Time: 10am - 3.30pm
Cost/booking: £3 per trail. Book online or when you arrive. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for your adventure.
RSPB Conwy nature reserve
Conwy’s Creepy Creatures Quiz Trail
Follow the clues and learn about the creepiest of creatures that call Conwy home. From spooky spiders, to freaky frogs and much more! Don’t forget to collect your reward afterwards.
Date: Available every day during half term
Time: 9.30am-4.30pm
Cost/booking: £1 per quiz sheet. Normal admission charges apply for non-members.
The Ugly Bug Ball, Conwy
Calling all young monsters, it’s almost Hallowe'en! Get dressed up and join the RSPB for a Hallowe'en-themed bug safari. What creepy crawlies will you discover?
Date: Wednesday 27 October
Time: 11am-12.30pm
Cost/booking: RSPB members £5, non-members £7 and £1 per accompanying non-member adult. Booking essential.
Fancy dress for all, Conwy
Free entry for all in a fancy dress on Halloween!
Flaunt your fangs, grab your capes, paint your faces, and pay us a scary visit! Wear your creepiest costume on Hallowe'en to enjoy free entry to the reserve.
Date: Sunday 31 October
Time: 9am-5pm
Cost/booking: No booking required.
RSPB Ynys-hir, Powys
Twilight Trail
Discover the wildlife that comes out at dusk. Toast marshmallows on the fire and play some games.
Date: Wednesday 27 October
Time: 4pm-5.30pm

RSPB Newport Wetlands, Gwent
Spooky species Hallowe'en trail
Visit the reserves for a fun nature-filled adventure. Start practising your riddles and rhymes ready to discover the spooky species on our nature trail.
Date: 25 – 31 October
Time: available 10am – 3pm, daily
Cost/booking: £3 per child and includes a prize at the end for completion. No need to book, just turn up on the day.
Please note, dogs are not permitted on this nature trail. The cost of the nature trail does not include the car parking fee.
The Gruffalo’s bug buffet – Minibeast hunting
Become a nature detective this Hallowe'en and join us for a bug hunt like no other…
Discover the spooky and spectacular creepy crawlies we have lurking on our reserve. The activity will follow a Gruffalo’s Buffet theme story to get your little ones in the bug hunting mood.
Every child's ticket includes a free entry for one adult. To avoid overcrowding at the event, any additional adults come at a charge.
Remember to keep an eye on the weather forecast and bring wellies, waterproofs, and warm clothes.
Date: Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 October
Time: Two sessions each day 11am - 12pm / 2 - 3pm
Cost/booking: Child RSPB member - £5.30/ Child non-member - £6.50/ Additional adult ticket - £2
After the spooky goings on, don’t forget to visit the reserve shop where you can buy all kinds of nature goodies from bug hotels, nest boxes and bird feeders, to bug ID kits and wildlife books so you can continue to explore nature on your own doorstep.
The RSPB cafés also serve some terrifying tasty treats that will satisfy the whole family’s monstrous appetite.
