Delamere Forest, Cheshire

An evergreen forest in the Cheshire countryside, with heaps of activities on offer

Positioned at the heart of the Cheshire Plain, Delamere Forest is a picturesque haven of calm amid the county’s agricultural landscape. It’s also the largest wooded area in Cheshire.

This enchanting forest has a lake called Blakemere Moss at its centre, a feature of which are the tree stumps of a forgotten forest poking up from the water. There’s also a wealth of activities to keep families and friends entertained here.

Don’t leave home without your running shoes because there’s a series of routes to pound through the forest – measuring one, two and three kilometres – and there are wild running routes, too, if you prefer to go off piste.

Alternatively, you could take things a little slower and go for a gentle walk instead, enjoying the opportunity to admire the view or keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife – Blakemere Moss is a particular favourite of birders.

Other wildlife that might be seen in the area includes the small tortoiseshell butterfly, greater spotted woodpecker, white faced darter dragonfly, green woodpecker, siskin and the southern hawker dragonfly.

If wheels are more your style though, how about hopping onto your bike? There are gentle hills and smooth, sandy tracks to be explored, while more ambitious cyclists could head out through the miles of cross-country trails, and try the Manley skills area with its series of dirt jumps.

Those visiting with youngsters in tow won’t want to miss the Go Ape Tree Top Adventure and Tree Top Junior. There’s plenty of fun to be had up in the air with these zip wires, Tarzan swings and obstacles. There’s also the Go Ape Forest Segway – immensely popular with older kids and a unique way to travel the trails. If your companions are of the four-legged variety, you can pack your pooch or pony into the boot or box and bring them here, too, as both are welcome.
