DAYS OUT

A country day out in Chirk

by Webmaster

Brynkinalt Hall in Chirk, near Wrexham, may still be a private home, but an invitation to view awaits

Grade II*-listed Brynkinalt Hall dates back to 1612 when the central portion was completed by Sir Edward Trevor. So history is high on the agenda when visting this fascinating property in North Wales.

The Trevor family boasts a rich and illustrious story. They remained loyal to the Crown during the Civil War, and in 1662, Marcus Trevor was made 1st Viscount Dungannon by Charles II for gallantry, after he wounded Oliver Cromwell at the Battle of Marston Moor.

Still the private home of the Trevor family, Brynkinalt nevertheless welcomes groups of visitors by appointment, while individual and small group tickets can be bought for tours on set days via the historic property website Invitation to View. Highlights of the tours include a look at the hall's furniture, stained glass, oil paintings and book collection.

The gardens consist of a formal west garden, ornamental shrubbery and walled garden. They fell into decline following the Second World War but have been beautifully restored, and the family continue to renovate, with new planting schemes and restoration of architectural features.

The gardens are open several times a year for charitable events, as well as for the National Garden Scheme, which for 2018 is on Thursday 5th July, when the formal roses, mixed perennials and herbaceous borders will be in bloom. Booking isn't required but note that the house itself won’t be open on this date.

Brynkinalt also has a horse-riding and carriage club, which offers riders access to the six miles of peaceful woodland tracks and fields of the estate. There are also plans for riding fun days during the spring and summer months.
